The Renaturing Project
Vila do Bispo sits at the southwestern tip of Europe — a unique microclimate shaped by Atlantic winds, Mediterranean sunshine, and the convergence of two ocean currents.
Annual averages based on ERA5 reanalysis data (1991–2020 climate normals) for 37.12°N, 8.88°W.
Annual average. Ranges from 11°C (Jan) to 23°C (Aug).
Concentrated Oct–Mar. Virtually zero in July–August.
One of Europe's sunniest locations. 300+ days/year.
Strong Nortada winds in summer. Atlantic exposure year-round.
Virtually frost-free. Minimum rarely below 3°C.
June–September: extreme drought stress. Key challenge for restoration.

Climate change is already reshaping Mediterranean ecosystems. Our restoration strategy must account for these shifts.
Longer, hotter dry seasons extend the fire window. Our species selection favors fire-resilient Mediterranean natives like Cistus and Quercus that regenerate rapidly after burning.
Declining summer rainfall means deeper root systems are essential. Permaculture water harvesting (swales, keyline design) buffers against drought by recharging groundwater.
Some endemic species face habitat squeeze as temperatures rise. Our corridor approach connects habitat fragments, allowing species migration along altitude gradients.
More intense rainfall events on hardened soils cause erosion. Soil restoration through organic matter addition and cover cropping improves infiltration and resilience.
